A Sequence Did Not Send

Find why a marketing sequence did not enroll or send to an expected recipient.

Most common reasons

  • The sequence is draft, testing, paused, or archived instead of active.

  • The sender domain is not verified, so live marketing email is blocked.

  • The sequence has no trigger or no entry step.

  • The trigger did not match the subscriber or event.

  • A filter step excluded the recipient.

  • The recipient is not subscribed or is not mailable for the marketing category.

  • A wait step is scheduled for the future.

  • The sequence is location-scoped and the triggering event happened at another location.

  • Re-entry rules prevented the same subscriber from entering again.

Troubleshooting checklist

  1. Open Staff > Marketing > Sequences and open the sequence.

  2. Confirm the status. Use testing or dry run for previews; use active only when real sends should happen.

  3. Confirm the email sender domain is verified under Staff > Account > Custom domain.

  4. Confirm the sequence has a trigger and at least one entry step.

  5. Run a dry run with a subscribed test recipient. Dry-run wait steps are compressed so you can review the path faster.

  6. Open the sequence report, dry runs, or enrollments to inspect events.

  7. Check each filter, wait, send email, send form, tag, promotion, and goal step in the path.

  8. Check the subscriber's status, email, category preferences, and unsubscribe/bounce history.

Activation issues

  • Activation requires a trigger and entry step.

  • Activation checks for loops in the sequence path. Remove any step cycle before activating.

  • Activation requires confirmation text when prompted.

  • A paused sequence stops advancing real in-flight enrollments until it is made active again.

  • Deleting may be blocked while people are still moving through the sequence; pause or archive according to your intended outcome.

Common issues and fixes

  • Dry run says no subscriber was found: choose a subscribed test recipient from the search.

  • Dry run says add a step: add at least one entry step before testing.

  • Email step recorded but no real email arrived: check sender domain, recipient mailable status, and whether the sequence was in testing/dry-run mode.

  • Recipient should have re-entered but did not: review allow re-entry and cooldown settings.

  • A form or promotion step skipped: inspect the enrollment event reason and confirm the form or promotion is still published/active.
